  • 1.  MS Office update - MapInfo Pro v17.0.4.3 link to Access database no longer working

    Our IT remotely installed a MS Office update this morning, since when a MapBasic program fails and causes MapInfo v17.0.4.3 to crash.  This is where a Link Table is populated with the results of a query, and then populates a table within Access (16.0.13029.20342) 64-bit.  The IND, ID and MAP parts of the MapInfo table are deleted when MapInfo crashes.  I get a runtime error (Application: MapInfoPro.exe "The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception) and an application error (Faulting application MapInfoPro.exe, Faulting module name ACEDAO.DLL).

    It seems that MapInfo Pro v17.0.4 can no longer connect to Access - has anyone else had this problem?  I am going to have to revert to v15 to use the old Access driver in order to keep working for now.

    Hi Jane,

    My guess is that IT have installed the 32bit version of Office which has removed the 64bit Microsoft Access Database Engine which is used by MapInfo to access Excel and Access file types. You should be able to test this theory by trying to open an Excel spreadsheet.

    Thank you Duri.  It was indeed something similar that happened - the Access database engine was re-installed and now 64bit is working again and all is well.

    We have experienced the same problem here on installs involving the following Windows 10 editions so far (does not seem to be bound to Windows version):

    Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 10.0.17134
    Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 10.0.19041
    Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 10.0.18362
    Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 10.0.16299
    Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 10.0.18362

    And the following Office editions:

    Office 2016
    Office 365 16.0.13029.20344
    Office 365 16.0.13127.20408

    We have for many years used MapInfo in scenarios where Access Database Engine is used in parallel with Office installs (because they don't have Access or not the same bitness as MapInfo). This has worked across Office updates but something has changed.

    One of our customers have needed to repair by reinstalling Access Database Engine three times since August and it just happened again yesterday to yet another. We can't keep on doing this and are working hard to figure out the underlying cause.

    We're not sure it's that Access Database Engine breaks, because we have Access connectivity before this error in our application? We do however also get it as soon as we open Access tables from MapInfo.

    Also we suspect Jane's issues will return in a few weeks or months as Office updates are released.

    Hi Jonas
    Was MapInfo installed with Administrator rights?
    That is, select setup.exe and Run As Administrator.
    This is needed to install the necessary updated Microsoft components.
    Without it, they do not get updated.

    Hi!

    I'm unsure how this relates to MapInfo Access support working until Office is updated? You're saying that MapInfo needs to have been originally installed with administrator rights for it to survive Office updates?

    I'm saying it's the first thing that we check - that the other Microsoft components have been updated.
    Then look to see what else might be causing the problem.

    Just a quick follow up for anyone coming across it:

    We fixed this by linking to our Access tables with Server Link Table rather than Register Table with Type Access.

    Maybe it could also be fixed with Register Table with Type ODBC and a Microsoft Access connection string. I never tried that, but in essence what we're doing is connecting to Access via ODBC rather than directly using its driver, and this apparently works better.

    This looks to have been addressed in the upcoming 2019.3 release.  We found a change in the code from 17.x that caused the issue with refreshing Access tables after an investigation from another related customer issue.  MIPRO-111655.

    We had the same issue where IT has pushed out a change that corrupts MapInfo's ability to open MS Access table.  I tried it in MapInfo 19.3 (Build 43) and it also freezes.  So far the only fix is to reinstall the original database engine each time IT patches which is not great.
