Which functions or icons or combination of icons should I use if I want to report an out of balance between sources. For example missing records from one source compared to the other.  

I was able to join the matched sources, but having difficulty finding the right combination of functions and icons to use to report the opposite.

Hi JL... One of the resources that like to use is the HELP within DQ+.  If you go to HELP and search for "join", you will find some great examples on finding some of the variations you mention.

Or alternatively, you can use the Recon Check node as well, with a following filter to only pass on the records you need.
