LIDAR in MapInfo Advance

  • 1.  LIDAR in MapInfo Advance

    Hi All,

I am trying to process some LIDAR data with MapInfo Advanced 2019.3 and getting the following error in the log.

"Error number: 287 occurred in file: in function: at line: -1 reporting: ""Error: No valid stations found."""

Any idea /advice on what this error relates to? I am trying to use some las files that are available here ->

City of Melbourne 3D Point Cloud 2018 | Open Data | Socrata

    Thanks,

    Nigel

    Hi Nigel

MapInfo Pro v2019.3 comes with a couple of LiDAR tools. Are you using any of these or are you mainly trying to create a grid from the LiDAR data?
Can you share a screenshot of the settings you are using?

    Thanks

    Hi Peter,

Screen shot attached. I am trying to use the LIDAR tools.

    Cheers,

I wonder if the data doesn't hold a "Classification" column. From the site I found this:
XYZ points for buildings, terrain, vegetation (non classified) for the City of Melbourne area.
Can you try to create a grid from the file? In the window where you select the input data, you are also asked to select a column for the grid values. Here you can see what fields are included in the dataset.

    Hi Peter,

I tried some different files and they worked OK. Maybe a classification thing with the other files??

Is there anywhere in the documentation that describes the error codes for MapInfo Advance?

    Cheers,

    Nigel

    Hey

No, I don't think we have included potential error codes in the documentation. Do you get an error code besides -1?
Did the first dataset, you used, contain a Classification field?

    Hi Nigel,

As already suggested by Peter the issue is coming since the las files are not having any classification information. This is the information that we get by running Lasinfo tool on any 1 las file from City of Melbourne data.
As you can see in the last line it shows that 1205187 points are never classified.
Currently in LiDAR surface tool we only generate output on the basis of classification. If input data doesn't have any points for the classification parameters selected then we give "No valid station found" error. If you provide any file with classified points then it will work.

We can take an enhancement for future MapInfo release to improve the error message and also to allow surface tool to work on unclassified points.

For now as a workaround you can use Triangulation tool under Raster TAB->Create Raster to generate output from the same. Just select the list of input files in the tool to generate the output.
Below is the output that I got:

Hope this helps. Please let us know if there are any follow up queries on the same.

    Thanks

Thanks guys, appreciate your help. Agreed, Error is cause by no classification in las file.

We could do with a sample LiDAR file that does have classification data in it, rather than these "sanitised" files.
Any benevolent survey companies out there???

How many do you want, John?

In Denmark, the LiDAR data is part of the Open Data initiative. You can get these files from their FTP server: ftp://ftp.kortforsyningen.dk/dhm_danmarks_hoejdemodel/PUNKTSKY/

You will need an account to access the data. You can create the user here: https://kortforsyningen.dk/indhold/min-side-0
You can read more about the process here: How to create a user account.

I have downloaded and shared LiDAR data for a small area near Odense, H.C. Andersen's Childhood Home. The area also includes Tusindårsskoven, The Thousand-Year Forest. It doesn't get closer to a fairy tale than that :-)

    Great one Peter.
Which is the projection system in Denmark that we should use?

    Hi John

    UTM Zone 32 ETRS89, EPSG:28532.
You can find it under Danish Coordinate Systems

If you check the coordinate system later and see that it's using this instead, don't worry:
ETRS TM Zone 32, Northern Hemisphere, EPGS:3044

They are using the exact same parameters but two different EPSG codes.
The latter is mostly above the Danish in the projection file, unless you are using a Danish version of the projection file.
