The new GeoLocation #API is now available on locate.pitneybowes.com. This is a Multi-Modal Device Location API for geolocating IP addresses, fixed-line, wireless phones, and Wifi Access Points.

We decided to build GeoLocation a little different than the mobile platform providers - Google and Apple. While they both have great GeoLocation APIs and have amassed global location databases and solved one of the hardest problems to solve, we’ve made it easier for developers to implement and maintain. The GeoLocation API is available through a simple REST API, it's client-less and locates devices through the telecom network - so you don't need to have an app on the device - for all methods including IP, WiFi, Landline Phone, and Wireless Phone! We’ve solved the problem of using multiple services from multiple providers reducing overhead, time to value and maintenance.

Today we see this API used in all kinds of applications – ranging from eCommerce, to Financial fraud detection, to Field Service, to Logistics. For example, top tier fleet managers use it to manage billable hours of employees while providing customers higher quality service and visibility into deliveries. It is also very useful for geolocating IOT devices using IP, Wi-FI based location detection.

    Following are the methods available:

Location by IP Address: Returns the location coordinates corresponding to the IP Address. The service is available globally.

Location by Wifi Access Point MAC Address: Returns the location coordinates corresponding to the MAC Address of WIfi Access Point. This service is also available globally.

Location by Fixed Line Number: Returns the location coordinates corresponding to the fixed line phone number. This service is available for US fixed line numbers.

Location by Wireless Number: Returns the location coordinates corresponding to the wireless phone number. This service is available for US wireless phone numbers.

This service needs approval from wireless carriers as well as the mobile user and therefore has got 4 methods to enable the location check.

Checkout the new method "Device Status" we have added in GeoLocation API. This method can identify if a US number is landline or a wireless number. In addition it also provides the carrier details for that number.

Device Status: This service accepts a phone number as input and returns details distinguishing landline and wireless numbers and also checks if a wireless number can be located.
