On October 5, the Geospatial Data Act was signed into law as part of the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2018. The bill codifies the work of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (https://democrats-transportation.house.gov/committee-activity/faa-reauthorization-act-of-2018), which supports the application, use and policies of geospatial technology within most federal agencies, except Defense (see the full text of the bill - https://docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/20180924/HR302.pdf). The bill outlines many of the objectives of the committee including the mission of establishing a National Spatial Data Infrastructure and maintenance of the GeoPlatform (https://www.geoplatform.gov/), a web portal/data marketplace to the data repository of the federal government (used to be on Esri but I believe they've ported it to an open source platform). The bill has been in the works for several years. It's work reading the section on the the Act, which begins on page 583, Subtitle F.
