As a GIS person I never knew too much about Tableau until recently. Now that I've had some time to play around with it I'm hooked. Definitely not a tool for heavy geoprocessing but the different ways you can visualize data are great to add some variety to your analysis. This #Video breaks down how to map from a text file with coordinates in Tableau.

    The basic steps are:
    1. Connect to a text file
    2. Once on a worksheet, drag the longitude field (not the generated one but the actual field from the file) into Columns
    3. Drag the latitude field (not the generated one but the actual field from the file) into Rows
    4. From the drop down on the Longitude and Latitude measures, select Dimension instead of Average
    5. Drag and drop different dimensions from the left onto the marks boxes to choose how you want to symbolize them
