    Happy #MapInfoMonday!

MapInfo Pro has a couple of ways to draw statistics from your data. We will look into two of these methods in this article.

Another method, that we won't dive into, is to use the SQL Window to build your won query to calculate the desired statistics. We will get back to this at a later time.

    The Statistics Window

The first option will give you some very basic statistics for the currently selected records. The Statistics window can be opened from the Tool dropdown in the Windows group on the Home tab.

Once the window has been opened you can dock it or make it float like any of the tool windows. In the example below, I have docked it together with the Explorer window on the left side.

The content of the Statistics window depends on the current selection and will show all the numerical columns of the selection. For each column, it will give you the sum of the values in the column and the average value for the columns.

Change your selection and the content in the Statistics window also changes.

You can copy the content from the Statistics window by clicking inside the window and then using Ctrl + C to copy it to the Windows Clipboard.

The Statistics window gives you few details for all your columns.

    Calculate Statistics

The other easy-to-use statistics tool in MapInfo Pro gives you more details for a single column. It the Calculate Statistics tool that you can find on the Table tab. When you click the control, you will be prompted to select the table and column for which to calculate the statistics.

You can select your current selection or a full table. For columns, you are only presented with the numerical columns.

Click OK to accept your choices. The result will be presented in another dialog

As you can see Calculate Statistics gives you more details around the values in the column you selected compared to the Statistics window that only returned the Sum and Average/Mean.

I hope you found these two options useful when investigating your data.
