    Happy #MapInfoMonday,

In today's article, we will look at MapInfo (Pro) Viewer. I will not go into details around the features but more wanted to give you a heads up that MapInfo Viewer is (still) around.

In short, MapInfo Viewer is a limited version of MapInfo Pro that allows you to open and view MapInfo tables and workspaces without having a license for the full version of MapInfo Pro. You can also run MapInfo Pro Viewer if you have a license for MapInfo Pro. You can find more details about the difference between MapInfo Pro and MapInfo Viewer here: Using MapInfo Pro and MapInfo ProViewer

    Where to find MapInfo Viewer

MapInfo Viewer can be downloaded from the Precisely website. MapInfo Pro Viewer is in fact part of the standard MapInfo Pro installation package.

Go to the Trial download page for MapInfo Pro and request a trial version of MapInfo Pro via the link Precisely MapInfo Pro v2021 (2.x GB). Shortly after you will receive a link to the download page in your inbox. Download the installer to your local computer.

    How to install MapInfo Viewer

Once you have downloaded the installer to your local computer, unzip the file. Now right-click the file Setup.exe and use Run As Administrator to run the installer.
Now follow the Installation Guide to get MapInfo Viewer and potentially MapInfo Pro installed and licensed.

The dialog you see below is especially important as it controls what will get installed.

You can check the option MapInfo Pro - Licensed OR Trial version to get the full version of MapInfo Pro installed. This can be in the form of a licensed version or in the form of a 30-day trial version. Make sure to check this option if you want a shortcut to MapInfo Pro created on your computer.

You can also check the option MapInfo Viewer Subscription: Read-Only Capabilities for Free. If you check this option, the installer will create a shortcut to starting MapInfo Viewer on your computer's Start menu. Note that you will need to create a free account to be able to use MapInfo Viewer.

After this, you will also be asked where to install MapInfo Pro. You can keep the default location. When ready, the installer will install MapInfo Pro onto your system and create one of the shortcuts mentioned above, or even both shortcuts.

    How to start MapInfo Viewer

From the Start button, go to the MapInfo folder. From here locate the MapInfo Viewer 2021 and click this to start MapInfo Viewer.

You will be asked to log into your account if you are not. If you do not have an account, you can also create one through the login screen.

Once you have done so, you will be able to open tables and workspaces shared with you by people who have access to the full version of MapInfo Pro.

I hope this gives you a quick introduction to getting started with MapInfo Viewer. If you have questions, use the comments below.

    Hello.
We have used these instructions previously, and again today to try and install the Mapinfo Viewer.
Previous installs worked OK, but today even though the product appears to have installed we can't start it.
On program 'run' we get the following message box:
As this install is for a first-time user, and from previous install experience, we think that this script is trying to ask for an email address.
But all that happens is a blank window pops up but with no dialogue generated by the .js script
    Can anybody help, please?

Not sure if this is the right place to report the problem, but on trying to access Precisely Support, we find problems there as well, with the following message generated:

'We can't log you in because of an issue with single sign-on. Contact your Salesforce admin for help.'

    Hi John

Are you installing it with the MapInfo Pro v2021.1 installer?

Anyway, I can see there is a Technical Support Solution available to a similar issue:

Script error "Expected identifier, string or number" when accessing MapInfo Pro Geocoding services

Can you try if this solves your problem

    Thanks

    Thank You, Peter.

We have unticked the 'Automatically detect settings' check box, then re-installed using the installer program.

Unfortunately, we are getting the same response.

We have several different machines running VIEWER, but this is the first time we have seen this error.

If you think it is a local problem and there are no other reports of this issue we will hand over to our IT support.

    Thanks again.

    John Bradford.

    John,

This is a known issue for versions 17.0.5 and 2019.3 and we are looking for a way to mitigate it. As a workaround, you can use version 2021 Viewer and it would not have this issue.

    Regards,
    Andrei

Just installed v2021.1 Viewer on a new PC but the Precisely Base Maps are greyed out.

Ah ha - you must need to sign up/log in for Services, I thought.

    However, error occurred

    Sign-up for Services error
Does Viewer allow Precisely Base Maps??

    Hi John

Did you install the latest build? That is MapInfo Pro v2021.1 Build 33.

We changed the way we connect to the APIs and so the Precisely Maps

OK, I was able to sign in again after signing out.

However, the Precisely Maps are disabled in MapInfo Pro Viewer even after signing into my account via the Services tab.

I can't recall if they always have been disabled in the viewer or if we broke something when renaming the controls from PB Maps (what's that actually their name back in the Pitney Bowes time?) to Precisely Maps.
Let me run this by our team.

    Ah ha

Back then, they called it GeoMap Bronze, GeoMap Steel and GeoMap Iron.

    Hi all,

    Engineering team confirmed the following:

User cannot create new maps with MapInfo Viewer.
User can open existing workspace containing bronze, steel or Iron maps as (example) but cannot create new ones.

    Hi David

Yes, that has got it. The user still needs a Services account (sign-up in the Backstage area).

    Cheers
